BONN, Germany – An insect bite in a man in central Germany has left him in a coma and left him with severe scarring on his face.
The victim, a 36-year-old man from the eastern city of Bonn, was attacked by a mosquito while in a car park outside his home, police said on Friday.
“He was wearing a mask when he was bitten,” Bonn police spokesman Thomas Meitner told Reuters news agency.
“It took about an hour for the bite to spread, and by then the wound had started to heal.”
The victim was treated in hospital and was released on Thursday, Meitners statement said.
He was discharged on Saturday.
Mosquito bites in Germany are rare but not unheard of.
In 2014, a man was bitten on the face and neck by a white fly in his home.
A woman in southern Germany was also bitten by a fly in the same week.
